Zimbabwe warns citizens amid growing African recruitment for Russia’s war
Zimbabwe has confirmed that 15 of its nationals were killed after being recruited to fight for Russia in the ongoing war in Ukraine, with more than 60 still trapped on the frontlines, officials said.
Information Minister Zhemu Soda described the recruitment as a sophisticated scheme of deception and human trafficking, using social media platforms to lure young Zimbabweans with promises of lucrative jobs abroad.
“It is a sophisticated scheme of deception, exploitation, and human trafficking that has already resulted in the loss of Zimbabwean lives,” Soda said.
Government Action and Warnings
The Zimbabwean government is in talks with Russian authorities to repatriate the bodies and secure the safe return of those still alive. This marks the first official acknowledgment that Zimbabwean citizens have been drawn into military service for Russia.
Soda urged citizens to exercise extreme caution regarding overseas job offers, emphasizing that recruiters often vanish when recruits are injured, captured, or killed, leaving families without support.
A Wider African Pattern
Zimbabwe’s case reflects a growing pattern across Africa. Ukrainian intelligence estimates that over 1,700 people from 36 African countries have been recruited to fight for Russia.
Kenya: About 252 citizens were illegally conscripted, with Foreign Minister Musalia Mudavadi securing an agreement to stop further deployments.
Ghana: 55 citizens have reportedly died, with roughly 272 lured into the conflict since 2022.
South Africa: 17 citizens were successfully returned after being tricked into joining the war.
The revelations have sparked concern across the continent as governments seek to protect their citizens from coercive recruitment into foreign conflicts.
