Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has criticized Israel’s decision to withhold military support for Ukraine following Russia’s 2022 invasion, calling it a political error. In a recent interview with Fox News, Zelensky stated, “Israel made a mistake” and suggested that Israeli leaders were hesitant due to fear of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

While Israel condemned Russia’s invasion and extended humanitarian aid, it refrained from providing weaponry. Zelensky revealed that he sought assistance from Western nations to encourage Israeli support. Talks earlier this year between the United States, Israel, and Ukraine reportedly considered transferring up to eight Patriot missile defense systems to Kyiv, but no deal materialized.

Israel’s limited response is tied to its strategic need to maintain relations with Russia, which has a military presence in neighboring Syria. However, tensions have risen as Russia criticized Israel over the October 7 Hamas attacks and hosted Hamas leaders, underscoring its growing ties with Iran.

Zelensky also highlighted his concerns about potential US military funding cuts. If aid decreases, he fears Ukraine may not withstand the ongoing Russian offensive. Zelensky underscored the importance of unity with the US, suggesting former President Donald Trump, if re-elected, could leverage his influence to end the war.

With Russia gaining ground and increasing discussion of peace talks, Ukraine faces challenges in securing favorable terms in any negotiations.
