Myanmar Military Airstrike Kills Over 40 in Rakhine State, UN Reports

A deadly airstrike by Myanmar’s military in Rakhine State this week has killed over 40 people and destroyed approximately 500 homes, according to a statement from the United Nations. The attack targeted the village of Kyauk Ni Maw in Ramree Island township, with women and children among the casualties.

Myanmar has faced ongoing violence since the military’s 2021 coup, which ousted the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi, sparking widespread armed resistance and protests. The conflict has left thousands dead and displaced millions.

The Arakan Army (AA), an ethnic armed group, corroborated the UN’s report, identifying at least 26 Muslim villagers among the dead and confirming 12 injuries. Images from the scene showed widespread destruction, with buildings reduced to rubble and residents sifting through the charred aftermath.

The military government has not responded to media inquiries but has previously denied targeting civilians, claiming operations focus on combatting “terrorists.” Meanwhile, the UN has called for all parties to respect international humanitarian law and ensure humanitarian aid access.

The Blood Money Campaign, a coalition aimed at cutting financial support to Myanmar’s military, has urged global sanctions on aviation fuel supplies to prevent further airstrikes. The UN estimates that more than 3.5 million people have been displaced by the ongoing conflict, with over 1.5 million displaced in the past year alone.
