Israeli Warplanes Strike Military Sites in Syria’s Deraa Province

Israeli warplanes conducted airstrikes on military positions in Syria’s southern Deraa province, according to reports from Syrian and Israeli media. The attacks targeted military assets of the former Bashar al-Assad regime.

Syrian state news agency SANA reported that on Monday night, Israeli aircraft carried out multiple strikes on the towns of Jbab and Izraa in northern Deraa, located around 103 km (64 miles) south of Damascus.

The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights confirmed that 17 Israeli airstrikes hit two military sites: the Artillery Regiment 89 and the 12th Brigade, both previously controlled by the Assad regime. No casualties have been reported.

Israeli media outlet Channel 14 stated that the strikes aimed to destroy regime outposts, weapons depots, radars, tanks, and artillery, which rebel groups in Syria were attempting to seize.

Since the ousting of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in December, Israel has intensified its airstrike campaign against military targets in Syria. The Syrian Observatory reported that Israel carried out over 500 airstrikes between December 8 and December 31, 2024, and has continued its attacks into 2025.

Israel’s primary objective is to prevent military assets from falling into the hands of groups hostile to Israel, particularly along its border in southern Syria. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reiterated last month that southern Syria must be demilitarized, warning that Israel would not accept the presence of forces from the newly formed Syrian government near Israeli territory.

Since the fall of the Assad regime, Israel has also taken control of parts of the UN-patrolled buffer zone along the Golan Heights, which has separated Israel and Syria since 1974.
