Iran uses Russian drone strategies to penetrate air defenses amid Middle East tensions
Russia is reportedly sharing drone warfare tactics with Iran, based on strategies developed during the war in Ukraine, raising concerns about air defense vulnerabilities in the Middle East.
Operational guidance from Ukraine conflict
Western intelligence officials told CNN that Moscow has moved beyond general support, now providing specific operational guidance from its experience in coordinated drone attacks against Ukraine. These tactics, designed to overwhelm and bypass air defense systems, are believed to be adopted by Iran for attacks on U.S. targets and Gulf countries.
Iranian Shahed drones, previously used by Russia in Ukraine, have reportedly successfully penetrated air defense systems in several Gulf states, demonstrating the effectiveness of the shared strategies. Officials noted that the drones often fly in coordinated waves and change flight paths mid-mission, making them difficult to intercept.
Escalating Middle East tensions
The intelligence sharing comes amid rising regional tensions. Since February 28, the U.S. and Israel have conducted Operation Epic Fury against Iran, prompting retaliatory drone and missile strikes across the Middle East.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has warned that the confrontation could become one of the most serious global security risks in recent years. Ukrainian intelligence has also reportedly detected Russian-made components in Iranian drones used against U.S. military facilities in the region.
Experts warn that this Russia-Iran cooperation may further increase the threat to U.S. and allied air defenses, drawing international attention to the evolving use of drone warfare tactics tested in Ukraine.
