Zelensky Offers Counter-Drone Expertise as Iran Drone Threat Grows
Ukraine has deployed military drone defense teams to the Middle East, offering its battle-tested expertise to help countries defend against Iranian drone attacks following recent U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran.
In a video address, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that Ukrainian specialists have been sent to Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia. Their mission is to strengthen air defenses and counter the growing threat of Iranian drones across the region.
Zelensky also said Ukrainian experts are supporting U.S. forces in Jordan, helping protect American military facilities from potential drone strikes.
“Ukraine has the greatest experience in the world in countering attack drones,” Zelensky said, referring to years of defending against Russian drone and missile attacks during the war.
Ukraine’s Drone Warfare Expertise
Ukraine has gained extensive experience fighting drone warfare, particularly against Iranian-made Shahed drones used by Russia throughout the war.
Unlike many countries that rely on expensive air-defense missiles, Ukraine has developed low-cost interceptor drones capable of neutralizing incoming drones efficiently. Kyiv is now offering both technology and operational knowledge to partners in the Gulf and Middle East.
According to Ukrainian officials, the United States and at least 10 countries across Europe and the Middle East have requested assistance in countering drone threats.
Strategic Deals in the Gulf
Zelensky said Rustem Umerov, secretary of Ukraine’s National Security and Defence Council, is traveling to the Gulf region along with military and intelligence officials to negotiate “concrete agreements” on security cooperation.
Ukraine hopes these partnerships will strengthen diplomatic ties and bring financial support through the sale of interceptor drone systems.
Kyiv Seeks Support in Return
While Kyiv is willing to share its expertise, Zelensky stressed that countries receiving help should also support Ukraine’s defense.
Specifically, Ukraine wants more advanced air-defense systems, including Patriot missile batteries, which are critical for intercepting high-speed Russian ballistic missiles.
“Those who seek Ukraine’s help must continue assisting our defense,” Zelensky said.
Balancing Global Support and Domestic Needs
The move also carries political risks inside Ukraine, where some fear resources could be diverted from the country’s own war effort.
However, Kyiv believes the initiative could boost its global influence, strengthen alliances in the Gulf region, and generate funding for its war-damaged economy.
As drone warfare becomes a defining feature of modern conflicts, Ukraine is positioning itself not only as a frontline battlefield innovator but also as a global leader in counter-drone defense technology.
