Rising drone attacks in Iraq target US facilities and Kurdish regions
Iran-backed militias have escalated drone attacks in Iraq, targeting U.S. facilities and Kurdish areas in the Kurdistan Region. The recent strikes mark a growing wave of drone attacks linked to Iran’s proxy forces operating in the country.
According to reports, militants launched drones toward U.S. sites in Baghdad, including a radar system positioned on top of a U.S. diplomatic facility. The radar is believed to be connected to a defense gun system designed to protect against drones and mortar attacks.
In northern Iraq’s Kurdistan Region, multiple attacks were also reported. Local media outlet Rudaw stated that the region was targeted by seven explosive-laden drones early Saturday. The drones were reportedly aimed at the U.S. consulate in Erbil as well as other military and civilian sites.
Security sources said that six drones were intercepted over Erbil at around 10 a.m. local time. The drones were shot down by U.S. defense systems before reaching their targets. Around the same time, another one-way attack drone attempted to strike Sulaimani city, further highlighting the expanding scope of these attacks.
The incidents underline growing tensions in Iraq as Iran-backed militias increase pressure on U.S. positions while also targeting Kurdish opposition groups in the region. Authorities continue monitoring the situation as drone threats remain a major security concern.
