Kyiv reports high Russian casualties while cautioning US air defence supplies may run low due to Iran war
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky reported that Russia has lost more than 8,000 troops in the past week alone, as Moscow attempts to intensify offensives amid improving spring weather.
“The only tangible outcome for the Russian army has been an increase in their losses – more than 8,000 killed and seriously wounded Russian soldiers in just these seven days,” Zelensky said in his nightly address.
Rising Russian Losses
Zelensky said that while Russian forces are seeking to take advantage of better conditions, their attacks have come at a steep human cost. He also highlighted ongoing resource strains for the Ukrainian side due to the broader geopolitical landscape.
Warning on Air Defence Supplies
The Ukrainian president cautioned that US-supplied Patriot air defence missiles could face shortages if the Middle East conflict continues. Speaking to the BBC, he noted that the US produces about 60–65 Patriot missiles per month, roughly 600–700 per year.
Zelensky said that on the first day of the Iran war, 103 missiles were already used, raising concerns that stockpiles in the Middle East could be depleted.
“For Putin, a long war in Iran is a plus,” he warned, emphasizing that prolonged conflicts strain defensive resources and benefit Russian strategy.
Strategic Implications
The remarks highlight how multiple global conflicts intersect, with the Iran war impacting missile availability for Ukraine, while Russia continues to suffer heavy losses on the eastern front.
