Fighting intensifies on eastern Ukraine front as both sides report territorial advances

The Ukraine-Russia war saw renewed clashes on the eastern front, with both sides claiming control of key villages amid ongoing military operations.

Russia’s defence ministry announced that its forces had captured Sheviakivka, a village in northeastern Kharkiv region, as part of its slow advance. Ukraine’s military did not acknowledge the loss.

Ukrainian Forces Counterattack

Meanwhile, a Ukrainian paratroop unit reported that it had retaken Berezove, a village in Dnipropetrovsk region previously under Russian control. The 95th Separate Assault Brigade highlighted their progress on Facebook, stating:

“Step by step, paratroops are pushing Russian forces out of Ukrainian lands.”

Strategic Context

The fighting is concentrated in Ukraine’s eastern Donetsk region, particularly around the heavily defended “Fortress Belt” of cities. Analysts expect a new Russian spring offensive, and Ukraine aims to repel advances using recent tactical gains.

Senior Russian military officials have said Moscow seeks to establish buffer zones along the Kharkiv and Sumy regions bordering Russia, while Ukrainian leaders report progress along the 1,250 km frontline in southern areas.

The dual claims highlight the fluid and contested nature of the battlefield, with both sides striving for strategic advantage as peace talks supported by the US continue to stall.
