Taiwan-China tensions rise as US focus shifts, raising fears of military pressure
Taiwan has raised concerns that China could exploit US distraction caused by the ongoing Middle East war, increasing pressure on the island amid already heightened Taiwan-China tensions.
Officials in Taipei say Beijing appears to be taking advantage of shifting global priorities, as the United States reallocates military resources to the Middle East. A senior Taiwan security official warned that China is trying to create instability and test the region during this period.
Rising Military Pressure from China
China has resumed large-scale air force incursions near Taiwan after a brief lull, signaling renewed military activity. Taiwan’s defence ministry reiterated that China’s intention to annex the island by force has never changed.
Beijing, which considers Taiwan part of its territory, has increased military drills and pressure campaigns, making the Taiwan Strait one of the world’s most dangerous flashpoints.
US Military Presence Still “Formidable”
Despite concerns, US officials insist their military remains capable of handling multiple global threats simultaneously. Washington reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, even as forces are repositioned.
Analysts warn, however, that a prolonged conflict elsewhere could drain US resources, weaken its presence in the Indo-Pacific, and embolden China to act more aggressively.
China’s “Cognitive Warfare” Strategy
Taiwan is also wary of China using the Middle East conflict as part of a broader “cognitive warfare” campaign, spreading disinformation to undermine public confidence.
Officials say online narratives, including AI-generated content, have attempted to portray Taiwan as vulnerable, particularly in terms of energy security and defence readiness.
China has also promoted potential benefits of “reunification,” including infrastructure and energy support, which Taiwan has dismissed as propaganda tactics.
Watching and Learning from Global Conflict
Experts believe China is closely studying the war to understand US military tactics, weapons performance, and response strategies.
This could influence Beijing’s planning for any future move against Taiwan, especially as it gathers data on advanced systems like air defence networks and fighter jets.
Taiwan Strengthens Its Defence
In response, Taiwan is boosting its defence spending and emphasizing self-reliance. Officials say the island is determined to protect its sovereignty regardless of shifting global dynamics.
“We must present a clear message that we are ready to defend ourselves,” a government official said.
