Iran-backed Houthis launch missile strikes, raising fears of wider Middle East war

The Middle East war is intensifying as Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen launched a barrage of missiles at Israel, marking their first direct attack since the conflict between the United States, Israel, and Iran began.

The Houthis said they targeted “sensitive Israeli military sites” and warned that further strikes would follow. Israel confirmed it intercepted two incoming missiles from Yemen, preventing damage or casualties.

Houthis Enter Conflict, Raising Global Concerns

The Houthis’ involvement signals a dangerous expansion of the Iran war, increasing fears of a broader regional conflict. The group is part of Iran’s so-called “axis of resistance,” alongside Hezbollah in Lebanon and Hamas in Gaza.

Their entry into the war is particularly concerning due to their ability to disrupt global shipping routes, especially in the Red Sea.

Strategic Threat to Global Trade and Energy

The Houthis control much of Yemen’s Red Sea coastline, giving them strategic influence over key maritime routes. They have previously launched nearly 200 attacks on ships between late 2023 and early 2025, damaging vessels and forcing major shipping companies to reroute.

These disruptions have affected nearly 15% of global seaborne trade, with ships avoiding the Red Sea and taking longer routes around southern Africa.

The situation is further complicated by tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, where about 20% of the world’s oil and gas supplies typically pass. Its partial closure has already caused oil prices to surge, raising concerns about a global economic slowdown.

Missile Strikes and Escalation Continue

Before the हमला, Houthi officials warned they were ready for direct military intervention if the Red Sea was used against Iran or if other countries joined the conflict.

Shortly after, they confirmed launching ballistic missiles, followed by a second wave of missiles and drones later the same day. The group vowed to continue attacks until what it calls “aggression” against resistance forces ends.

Ongoing War and Diplomatic Tensions

Meanwhile, U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran continue, even as President Donald Trump signaled a possible delay in further escalation, including a threatened attack on Iran’s energy infrastructure.

Trump claimed Iran is seeking a deal to end the war, though Tehran has denied any ongoing negotiations.

A Region on Edge

Despite the geographical distance between Yemen and Israel, the Houthis have demonstrated the ability to strike long-range targets. Their growing involvement adds another layer of uncertainty to an already volatile conflict.

With critical shipping lanes like the Bab al-Mandab Strait at risk, the war now threatens not only regional stability but also the global economy and energy security.
