82nd Airborne Division troops deployed as Trump weighs next moves in escalating Iran conflict

Thousands of U.S. Army paratroopers from the elite 82nd Airborne Division have begun arriving in the Middle East, officials told Reuters on Monday, as President Donald Trump considers his next steps in the war against Iran.

The deployment adds to a growing U.S. military presence in the region, including 2,500 Marines who arrived over the weekend and additional sailors and Special Operations forces. The paratroopers, based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, include headquarters elements, logistics support, and one brigade combat team.

No decision has been made to send troops into Iran, but the buildup expands U.S. options for potential ground operations, including securing Kharg Island, a major hub for 90% of Iran’s oil exports, and protecting oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz. Experts say such operations would be highly risky, given Iran’s missile and drone capabilities.

Trump stated the U.S. is in talks with a “more reasonable regime” to end the conflict, while warning Tehran to open the Strait of Hormuz or face U.S. attacks on oil facilities and power plants. Any use of U.S. ground forces carries political risks, as public support for the Iran war remains low and Trump has pledged to avoid deep entanglements in Middle East conflicts.

Since the start of operations on February 28, the U.S. has struck more than 11,000 targets, with over 300 U.S. troops injured and 13 service members killed as part of Operation Epic Fury.
