Drone attack disrupts logistics at Ukraine’s key Danube port

KYIV; A Russian drone attack overnight struck Ukraine’s largest Danube river port, Izmail, damaging port infrastructure and a civilian vessel, Ukrainian authorities reported Wednesday.

According to Ukraine’s seaport authority on Telegram, fires broke out in warehouses but were quickly extinguished by emergency services, with no casualties reported. The regional development ministry said, “The enemy continues to target logistics and port infrastructure.”

Izmail, located on the southwestern tip of Ukraine along the Danube and facing Romania, has become a critical logistical hub during the war. After Russia blockaded Ukraine’s Black Sea ports in 2022, Danube ports like Izmail became the primary route for Ukrainian imports and exports.

Although the Black Sea ports reopened in 2023, the Danube terminals remain essential for certain cargo, including explosives and fuel, which continue to arrive exclusively via these river ports. The attack highlights ongoing vulnerabilities in Ukraine’s wartime logistics network and the strategic importance of river ports.
