Afghanistan-Pakistan tensions escalate after alleged Kabul hospital attack leaves hundreds dead, claims disputed

Afghanistan has accused Pakistan of carrying out a devastating airstrike on a hospital in Kabul, reportedly killing at least 400 civilians and injuring hundreds more. Pakistan has strongly denied the allegations, stating that its military targeted only military installations and militant infrastructure.

According to Afghan officials, the strike hit the Omar Addiction Treatment Hospital, a major 2,000-bed facility, at around 9pm local time. The Taliban government’s deputy spokesman, Hamdullah Fitrat, said large parts of the hospital were destroyed, with rescue teams still searching for victims in the aftermath.

Eyewitnesses described a chaotic scene. A hospital security guard reported hearing jets overhead before explosions ripped through the building. He claimed that all casualties were civilians, including patients undergoing treatment.

Afghanistan’s government has condemned the incident as a “crime against humanity”, accusing Pakistan of violating its airspace and targeting a civilian medical facility.

In response, Pakistan dismissed the claims as “false and misleading”, insisting its strikes were precise and carefully executed to avoid civilian harm. Officials stated that the operation focused on terrorist groups and military targets allegedly operating from within Afghanistan, including facilities in Kabul and Nangarhar.

The incident comes amid intensifying clashes along the افغانستان–Pakistan border, marking one of the most serious escalations in recent years. Both sides have exchanged heavy fire, with casualties reported on both ends.

Pakistan has repeatedly accused Afghanistan of harboring militant groups, particularly the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), which it says is responsible for attacks inside Pakistan. Kabul has denied these allegations, further deepening tensions.

Meanwhile, the United Nations Security Council has called for urgent action to combat terrorism and reduce violence in the region. Efforts by international mediators, including China, have so far failed to secure a lasting ceasefire.

Experts warn the situation could worsen. Analysts suggest both countries appear determined to continue military actions, with no clear path to de-escalation.

As the conflict intensifies, humanitarian concerns are growing. The World Food Programme has begun mobilizing aid for thousands of displaced families, highlighting the worsening human impact of the crisis.
