Argentina is withdrawing its personnel from the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) following recent attacks on peacekeepers in southern Lebanon. The incidents have intensified as hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah escalate, with injuries reported among UN troops and significant damage to facilities.
UNIFIL confirmed the withdrawal of Argentina’s troops, marking the first notable departure from the mission amidst increasing tensions. UNIFIL spokesperson Andrea Tenenti stated that Argentina instructed its officers to return home but deferred questions on the reasons for this decision to the Argentine government. Argentina currently contributes three personnel to the mission, which includes 48 participating nations.
Recent weeks have seen a series of attacks on UNIFIL positions. A rocket, allegedly fired by non-state actors within Lebanon, struck a base near Ramyeh, injuring four Ghanaian peacekeepers, three of whom required hospitalization. Another attack damaged a workshop at the Shama base, and an armed individual fired on a UNIFIL patrol near Khirbat Silim. UNIFIL has launched investigations into these incidents.
Israel Defense Forces (IDF) blamed Hezbollah for the rocket attacks, claiming they were part of a broader barrage aimed at Israeli forces. UNIFIL also accused Hezbollah of staging attacks from populated areas, increasing risks to both civilians and peacekeepers.
Tensions have risen significantly since October 8, 2023, as Hezbollah launched daily attacks on Israeli positions, citing solidarity with Gaza amidst ongoing Israeli military actions. Despite the risks, UNIFIL has reaffirmed its commitment to its mandate, urging all parties to respect the neutrality of UN peacekeepers and their facilities.
The situation remains precarious, with UNIFIL’s operations severely hindered by the conflict. The mission is working to rebuild damaged facilities while facing accusations from both sides regarding their role and safety in the region.
