Civilians targeted during Ramadan in Hajjah province amid escalating Yemen conflict
HAJJAH, YEMEN – At least 10 people, including six children, were killed and more than 30 wounded in an artillery attack on a village in northern Yemen, officials reported Monday. The government blamed Iran-backed Houthi rebels for the shelling.
The attack struck civilians gathered for iftar, the evening meal breaking the daily fast during Ramadan, in Hajjah province. While most of the province is under Houthi control, some areas remain under the internationally recognized government based in Aden.
Initial reports cited eight fatalities, but the toll was later updated to 10, reflecting the severity of the assault. Houthi officials declined to comment on the incident.
UN Special Envoy Hans Grundberg expressed deep concern, urging that civilians must be protected at all times in accordance with international humanitarian law, and called for those responsible to be held accountable.
The attack underscores the continuing humanitarian crisis in Yemen, where clashes between government forces and Houthi rebels frequently place civilians at risk.
