At least 12 people were killed in a bombing attack on a security compound in Bannu, located in Pakistan’s northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, according to police and hospital sources. The attack, carried out by two explosive-laden vehicles, targeted the compound’s wall, causing massive destruction. Additional attackers stormed the site but were repelled by security forces.
Muhammad Noman, a spokesperson for Bannu District Hospital, confirmed that the death toll had reached 12, with 30 others injured. Among the casualties were at least seven children, who were trapped under the rubble caused by the blast.
Jaish al-Fursan, an affiliate group of the Pakistan Taliban, claimed responsibility for the bombing, stating that their attacks resulted in the deaths of numerous Pakistani security personnel. However, the military has yet to comment on the extent of any casualties.
Following the blast, six attackers were reportedly killed in an exchange of fire with security forces. The bombings created massive craters and severely damaged at least eight nearby homes.
This incident marks the third attack in Pakistan since Ramadan began, as Jaish al-Fursan has continued to target security installations. The blast follows a recent suicide bombing at a religious school in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, which killed six people, including key members of the Taliban.
The attack comes after a particularly deadly year for Pakistan, with over 1,600 casualties due to rising terrorism, as reported by the Center for Research and Security Studies in Islamabad. Pakistan continues to accuse Afghanistan’s Taliban government of failing to curb militant groups operating from Afghan territory, a charge the Taliban denies.
