Clashes Erupt at Melbourne Anti-War Protest: Dozens Arrested

Dozens of individuals were arrested following violent clashes between police and demonstrators at an anti-war protest in Melbourne. Protesters targeted the Land Forces International Land Defence Exposition, a military hardware sales event, accusing it of showcasing weapons used in global conflicts, including in Gaza. The protest, attended by about 1,200 people, saw demonstrators pelting officers with rocks, manure, and bottles of acid. Police responded with flashbang grenades and irritant sprays, leading to a tense standoff. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese condemned the violence, emphasizing the need for peaceful protest.

Victoria Police Commissioner Shane Patton confirmed 39 arrests and accused protesters of hypocrisy, claiming they advocated peace while instigating violence. Activists criticized the police for excessive force, including the use of baton rounds. Demonstrators expressed frustration over the A$10 million spent on police deployment, which saw reinforcements brought in from New South Wales to maintain order during the event.
