Darfur Civilians Starve Amid RSF Siege, Plead for Army and Aid Intervention

Civilians in North Darfur are facing starvation as they endure a prolonged siege by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The RSF has held the area under siege for nearly a year, leaving residents in desperate need of food and assistance.

The Joint Forces, an alliance of local armed factions supported by the Sudanese army, have managed to prevent an RSF invasion for now, but the civilian population continues to suffer. The nearly 500,000 residents in the Zamzam refugee camp, the largest in North Darfur, are experiencing severe food shortages, according to the United Nations’ Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC).

Locals in Zamzam camp reported receiving some food aid from Sudanese military aircraft earlier this week, but the supplies are expected to run out soon.

Many are calling on the Sudanese military to take immediate action to secure the flow of food, medicine, and humanitarian aid to the besieged region. Mohamed Khamis Doda, the spokesperson for Zamzam camp, emphasized the need for both military and humanitarian organizations to intervene urgently to save lives.

Despite these calls, there are growing concerns that the army lacks the political will and capacity to offer sufficient help to the civilians in dire need.
