At least two people were killed and seven others wounded in an attack on the Abu Shouk refugee camp in Sudan’s North Darfur state, a medical source told AFP late Monday. The attack has been attributed to the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
A source at the Saudi hospital in El-Fasher, the state capital, spoke on condition of anonymity and confirmed the casualties. Earlier, a volunteer aid group in El-Fasher had reported “intense bombardments” in the area, along with sightings of explosive drones flying over the city.
The RSF, led by Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, has been locked in conflict with Sudan’s military, headed by Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, since April 2023. The ongoing war has triggered what the United Nations calls the world’s worst hunger and displacement crisis, with over 12 million people forced from their homes and tens of thousands killed. A UN-backed assessment has also confirmed famine in parts of the country.
While Sudan’s military has recently reclaimed control over the capital, Khartoum, the country remains effectively divided. The army holds the east and north, while the RSF controls much of Darfur in the west and parts of the south. El-Fasher is the only regional capital in Darfur that has not fallen to the RSF, despite a prolonged siege.
On Monday night, RSF forces claimed to have killed numerous soldiers and pushed the military out of Khor Al-Daleb in South Kordofan state, near areas held by the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N), which has formed an alliance with the RSF.
