Earthquake’ as Israeli Bombs Shake Gaza; US Defends Israel at ICJ

An Israeli airstrike on the Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza has been described by residents as feeling like an “earthquake,” as at least eight people were killed in the attack. Gaza’s Health Ministry reports that at least 39 people have died across the besieged enclave in the past 24 hours.

Meanwhile, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague is holding its third day of hearings on Israel’s humanitarian obligations toward Palestinians. During the proceedings, the United States offered a strong defense of Israel’s ongoing military actions in Gaza.

As the humanitarian crisis worsens, the United Nations is urging immediate, coordinated action to halt what it calls a “humanitarian catastrophe” in Gaza. Israel’s total blockade of the territory has now stretched into its 60th day, leaving much of the population without access to food, water, medical supplies, and electricity.

In a related development, the United Kingdom’s Ministry of Defence confirmed that British forces joined a U.S.-led operation targeting Houthi positions in Yemen, a move seen as part of broader regional tensions escalating from the Israel-Gaza conflict.

According to the Gaza Health Ministry, Israel’s military campaign has killed at least 52,400 Palestinians and wounded 118,014 others. However, the Gaza Government Media Office has updated the death toll to more than 61,700, stating that thousands are believed to be buried under rubble and presumed dead.

In Israel, an estimated 1,139 people were killed during the October 7, 2023, Hamas-led attack, which also saw over 200 individuals taken captive.
