Egypt Rejects Proposal to Administer Gaza, Calls It Unacceptable

Egypt firmly rejected a proposal made by Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid, suggesting that Egypt should take control of Gaza for a period of at least eight years following the war. The proposal, which was accompanied by the offer of significant debt relief, was labeled “unacceptable” by Egyptian authorities, as it goes against Egypt’s longstanding policy on Gaza.

Tamim Khallaf, a spokesperson for the Egyptian Foreign Ministry, emphasized that any ideas or proposals that bypass the principles of Egyptian and Arab stances on Gaza are “unacceptable.” He reiterated that Gaza, along with the West Bank and East Jerusalem, are integral parts of Palestinian territories, and their future must be determined by Palestinian sovereignty.

Khallaf stressed that proposals like Lapid’s represent “half-solutions” that could prolong the conflict, rather than leading to a resolution. Egypt’s foreign ministry has long been opposed to any ideas that involve the displacement of Gaza’s 2.4 million Palestinian residents, calling such proposals a “red line.”

Earlier this month, Egypt also led diplomatic efforts to oppose a plan from former U.S. President Donald Trump, which suggested the U.S. take control of Gaza after relocating its inhabitants to neighboring Egypt or Jordan.
