Europe’s Gaza Response Branded a ‘Failure’ as Israeli Strikes Intensify

Spanish PM warns of credibility crisis while Belgium imposes sanctions on Israel

At least 20 people were killed in Israeli strikes across Gaza on Wednesday, as the conflict entered yet another deadly phase. On Tuesday alone, more than 100 Palestinians—including several journalists—lost their lives when residential areas, shelters, and entire neighborhoods were hit.

Spain’s Prime Minister sharply criticized Europe’s handling of the crisis, calling the continent’s collective response to the war in Gaza a “failure” that risks undermining its global credibility. His remarks came as Belgium announced sweeping new measures against Israel, including expanded arms embargoes, sanctions, and a ban on importing certain goods and services.

Since the war erupted on 7 October 2023, the toll has been devastating: at least 63,633 Palestinians killed and 160,914 wounded across Gaza, according to local health authorities. Israel continues to mourn the 1,139 people killed in the Hamas-led October 7 attacks, when about 200 were also taken captive.

As Israeli strikes intensify and European governments divide over their response, the conflict shows no sign of de-escalation—raising questions about Europe’s role in shaping the path to peace.
