Gaza Reels Under Intensified Israeli Strikes as UN Warns of Looming Famine

More than 60 Palestinians killed in latest air raids, including children and aid seekers, as malnutrition and displacement worsen across Gaza.

At least 61 Palestinians have been killed in the latest wave of Israeli attacks on Gaza, amid growing international concern over rising malnutrition and the looming threat of famine in the besieged territory. The United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) has warned that child malnutrition is rapidly worsening as access to aid remains perilously limited.

On Tuesday, Israeli airstrikes targeted the crowded Shati refugee camp in northern Gaza, killing at least 23 people and injuring dozens more, according to medical sources speaking to Al Jazeera. The Palestinian Civil Defence reported transporting “at least 18 martyrs and dozens of wounded since dawn,” most casualties resulting from strikes in the north.

In southern Gaza, two women were killed and 30 others injured near an aid distribution point north of Rafah, run by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF)—a controversial initiative supported by Israel and the United States. Since GHF began operations in late May, at least 875 Palestinians have died while attempting to access aid, according to the UN.

A separate strike in Gaza City killed six displaced Palestinians sheltering in a tent, the Civil Defence agency reported.

Adding to the humanitarian crisis, Israel issued new forced displacement orders for residents of 16 areas in northern Gaza, including the already devastated town of Jabalia. Eyewitness accounts describe scenes of mass panic as residents fled using cars, donkey carts, or on foot with no clear destination.

“People are using their cars and donkeys to evacuate the area, and all are moving towards the unknown; they don’t know where to go,” Al Jazeera correspondent Moath al-Kahlout reported from the ground.

Despite escalating conditions and rising death tolls, European Union states remain divided on how to respond to Israel’s military campaign and the deepening humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza.
