Gaza Winter Crisis: Displaced Families Battle Cold, Flooded Camps, and Ongoing Conflict

As heavy rains hit Gaza, displaced Palestinians face worsening winter hardships amid strict aid limits, rising violence, and a deepening humanitarian crisis.

Heavy winter rain has brought new misery to displaced Palestinians in Gaza, where thousands of families are now enduring flooded tents, harsh winds, and freezing temperatures. With shelters collapsing under the weight of water and mud, daily survival has become even more difficult for those already uprooted by months of conflict.

The United Nations warns that Israeli restrictions on humanitarian aid have left hundreds of thousands without adequate protection against the worsening winter conditions. Many are living in makeshift camps where plastic sheets and thin tarps offer little defense against the cold.

Meanwhile, violence continues despite an unstable ceasefire. Israeli attacks killed at least three people in Gaza today, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reportedly telling his cabinet he is uncertain how long the truce will last. In the occupied West Bank, tensions remain equally high as Israeli forces shot dead two Palestinians — one of them a 15-year-old boy — in the Far’a camp, according to local authorities.

The conflict’s reach extended beyond Gaza and the West Bank as well. UN peacekeepers in southern Lebanon reported that Israeli soldiers fired at them from a tank, raising new concerns about regional escalation.

Since October 2023, Israel’s war on Gaza has killed at least 69,483 Palestinians and wounded more than 170,000, according to health officials. On the Israeli side, 1,139 people were killed during the October 7 Hamas-led attacks, and about 200 were taken captive — events that ignited the ongoing war that continues to devastate civilian life across the region.

With families facing both conflict and climate, the Gaza winter crisis underscores a brutal reality: for many Palestinians, even the weather has become a new enemy.
