High-ranking Iranian officials killed and energy infrastructure targeted as oil prices surge amid regional conflict
On Day 19 of the US-Israel war with Iran, tensions in the Middle East escalated sharply as Israel killed Iranian Intelligence Minister Esmail Khatib and two other senior Iranian leaders in precision strikes on Tehran. Israel Defense Minister Israel Katz confirmed that the military is authorized to target any senior Iranian official when the opportunity arises.
These attacks follow the confirmed deaths of Ali Larijani, Iran’s top security official, and the head of the Basij paramilitary force, prompting Iran to announce “rapid and intense” retaliation against Israel.
The conflict has also hit critical energy infrastructure. Reports indicate that parts of Iran’s South Pars natural gas field and other facilities were attacked, though a US official clarified that American forces were not involved in the gas facility strikes. Meanwhile, the US military targeted Iranian missile sites along the Strait of Hormuz with 5,000-pound guided bombs designed to penetrate deep underground.
The energy market reacted sharply, with Brent crude rising to $110.90 per barrel and US crude nearing $99.78, reflecting fears of disruption in global oil supply. Gulf states including Qatar and Saudi Arabia reported fires and aerial threats at energy facilities, signaling a widening regional impact.
Further escalation was reported in Iraq, where drone and rocket attacks targeted the US Embassy in Baghdad, nearby hotels, and oil fields, with Iranian-backed militias claiming responsibility. Iran also struck Israeli cities, including Tel Aviv, killing two people, while a “hostile projectile” hit the Bushehr nuclear plant, causing no casualties or damage.
Diplomatic tensions are rising as Qatar expelled Iranian military and security attachés following attacks on its Ras Laffan natural gas facility, underlining the broader geopolitical fallout from the conflict.
The conflict continues to reshape security dynamics in the Middle East, with high-ranking deaths, energy infrastructure strikes, and cross-border attacks signaling that the war could further intensify in the coming days.
