Buffer zone strategy in southern Lebanon raises fears of ground invasion and displacement

Israel is planning to establish control over southern Lebanon up to the Litani River, according to Defence Minister Israel Katz, signaling a potential escalation in the ongoing Lebanon conflict.

Katz said Israel aims to create a buffer zone inside Lebanese territory to secure its northern border, adding that approximately 600,000 displaced residents of southern Lebanon would not be allowed to return until Israel’s security is guaranteed.

He also stated that homes near the border would be destroyed, a move likely to deepen the humanitarian crisis and increase tensions in the region.

In recent weeks, Israeli forces have intensified airstrikes across southern Lebanon, including attacks on bridges over the Litani River. Lebanese President Joseph Aoun described these strikes as a “prelude to a ground invasion”, raising fears of a broader military offensive.

The proposed plan underscores growing concerns over a wider regional escalation, as clashes between Israel and Hezbollah continue to expand beyond border skirmishes.
