Israel has confirmed the release of five Lebanese detainees captured during its ground offensive in southern Lebanon, which began on October 1 last year. The detainees were freed following deliberations by the committee overseeing the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hezbollah, Israeli media reported on Tuesday, citing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office.
The release came in response to increasing diplomatic pressure from Lebanon. Lebanese President Joseph Aoun met with US officials, including Gen. Jasper Jeffers, head of the international committee monitoring the ceasefire, and urged Israel’s full withdrawal from the Lebanese border region.
Reports indicate that Israel still holds 11 Lebanese citizens, including seven Hezbollah members, three civilians, and a soldier. Meanwhile, tensions persist, with Israeli drone strikes continuing in southern Lebanon despite the ceasefire. Recent attacks targeted Hezbollah members and affiliates, including a strike that killed Hassan Ezzeddine.
Efforts to accelerate Israel’s withdrawal are ongoing, with Speaker Nabih Berri engaging with ambassadors from the Quintet Committee to discuss diplomatic solutions.
