North Korea Tests New Hypersonic Weapons System to Boost Strategic Deterrence

Pyongyang claims successful launch of hypersonic projectiles as tensions rise ahead of Asia-Pacific summit in South Korea

North Korea announced it had successfully tested a new hypersonic weapons system on Wednesday, describing it as a major step forward in strengthening its strategic deterrence capabilities. The launch, carried out near Pyongyang, involved two hypersonic projectiles that reportedly struck a designated target in the country’s northeast, according to state news agency KCNA.

While KCNA did not confirm whether leader Kim Jong Un oversaw the test, the latest move underscores Pyongyang’s continued efforts to develop advanced missile technologies capable of evading enemy defenses. Hypersonic missiles, which can travel at speeds exceeding five times the speed of sound, are designed to maneuver unpredictably — making them harder to intercept than traditional ballistic missiles.

In response, South Korea’s military reported detecting multiple short-range ballistic missile launches, which coincided with preparations for a major Asia-Pacific leaders’ meeting in Seoul next week. The event is expected to host U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, adding a tense geopolitical backdrop to the latest North Korean weapons test.

U.S. Forces Korea said it was “fully aware” of the launches and strongly condemned the tests as “unlawful and destabilizing actions.” Washington urged Pyongyang to refrain from further provocations that would violate existing international sanctions.

The test highlights the North’s determination to advance its hypersonic missile program, despite global warnings and ongoing diplomatic isolation.
