Protest groups are organizing a major demonstration in Jerusalem this week against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s decision to fire Shin Bet chief Ronen Bar. The move, which has sparked widespread opposition, is seen by critics as an attempt to deflect blame for security failures related to the October 7 Hamas attack.
Initially scheduled for Wednesday, the protest was moved to Tuesday after reports emerged that Netanyahu might advance the cabinet vote on Bar’s dismissal. Organizers have vowed to rally outside government offices, with thousands expected to join.
Eran Schwartz, CEO of Hofshi B’Artzenu, accused the government of trying to dismantle the country’s democratic institutions. He also pointed out that the Shin Bet is currently investigating senior figures in the Prime Minister’s Office for alleged ties to Qatar, raising concerns about a conflict of interest.
Business leaders have also voiced strong opposition. The Israel Business Forum, representing major private-sector firms, warned that firing Bar would be a “destructive” move at a time when Israel faces economic and security challenges. They urged Netanyahu to focus on pressing national issues, including securing the release of Israeli hostages held in Gaza.
Meanwhile, Education Minister Yoav Kisch threatened to cut funding to a Tel Aviv school after its principal encouraged students to join the protests. Kisch called the decision illegal and warned that state funds for the school would be suspended if it went through with the plan.
Bar, who has admitted responsibility for security lapses on October 7, previously stated he would step down after all hostages are returned and a formal inquiry into the attack is established. However, he has resisted Netanyahu’s push to remove him, arguing that the decision is politically motivated rather than based on professional performance.
Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara has also intervened, cautioning Netanyahu that he cannot proceed with Bar’s dismissal until legal and factual justifications are examined. She raised concerns about the potential illegality of the move and its implications for national security.
Despite the pushback, Netanyahu’s allies insist the government has the legal authority to remove the Shin Bet chief. The dispute has intensified divisions within Israeli politics, with many viewing it as a critical moment for the country’s democratic institutions and security leadership.
