Red Cross Warns of ‘History Repeating’ in Sudan as New Killings Shock the World

The Sudan conflict deepens as the Red Cross raises alarm over mass killings in Darfur, calling it a haunting echo of past war crimes

A Grim Warning from the Red Cross

The head of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has sounded a dire warning about the Sudan conflict, saying that “history is repeating” after reports of mass killings in the war-torn Darfur region.

Speaking after a wave of violence in Al-Fashir, ICRC President Mirjana Spoljaric said the humanitarian situation is spiraling out of control. “The level of suffering, displacement, and destruction we are witnessing today brings painful memories of past atrocities,” she said.

Her remarks came as international agencies reported dozens of civilian deaths and the forced displacement of thousands following clashes between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) — rival groups locked in a brutal fight for control since 2023.

Fighting Engulfs Al-Fashir

Once considered one of Darfur’s last safe havens, Al-Fashir has fallen into chaos. Witnesses and aid groups describe entire neighborhoods burned, hospitals overwhelmed, and families trapped without food, water, or medical care.

According to reports verified by humanitarian organizations, the RSF captured the city, prompting mass executions and looting. Thousands of people fled toward Chad and South Sudan, seeking refuge from the escalating bloodshed.

The United Nations has warned that the Sudan conflict could soon become one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises, with millions at risk of famine if aid deliveries do not resume immediately.

ICC Investigates Possible War Crimes

The International Criminal Court (ICC) confirmed it is investigating reports of war crimes and crimes against humanity in Darfur, including alleged executions of civilians and the targeting of aid workers.

These investigations mirror those launched two decades ago, when similar atrocities in Darfur led to global outrage and sanctions. “It’s chilling to see the same patterns of violence returning,” said one senior ICC prosecutor.

The Red Cross has called for unhindered humanitarian access, urging all parties to respect international law and protect civilians. “No political goal justifies the suffering of ordinary people,” Spoljaric added.

The World Watches — Again

International leaders and human rights groups are urging immediate action to prevent another Darfur-scale catastrophe. Despite repeated appeals, ceasefire negotiations have failed, and aid convoys remain blocked by ongoing fighting.

Meanwhile, refugee camps across the region are overflowing, with families sleeping in makeshift shelters as food and medical supplies run dangerously low. The Sudan conflict is now in its second year, and global attention — once sharp — risks fading just as the crisis reaches its worst phase.

A Plea for Humanity

As the Red Cross warns of “history repeating”, the message is clear: the world cannot afford to look away. Sudan’s civilians are caught in a war not of their making — and their survival depends on swift international action.
