Russia launched air strikes on Kyiv overnight, prompting Ukraine’s air defense systems to respond, Ukrainian officials reported late Monday.
“Air defense forces are working to eliminate the threat in the skies over Kyiv,” Mayor Vitali Klitschko stated on the Telegram messaging app.
Explosions were heard in the capital and surrounding areas, with Reuters witnesses describing the sounds of air defense systems in action.
The attack comes just before scheduled talks in Saudi Arabia between Ukrainian and U.S. officials, which both sides hope will lead to significant progress toward ending the ongoing war.
