Saudi Arabia has led a wave of Arab condemnation following a series of Israeli airstrikes on Syrian territory, which reportedly resulted in numerous civilian and military casualties.
In a statement issued by the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Kingdom denounced the attacks as a clear violation of Syria’s sovereignty and a destabilizing action that breaches international laws. Riyadh called on the United Nations Security Council’s permanent members to take a firm stance against continued Israeli violations in Syria and the wider region. It also urged the implementation of accountability mechanisms to address such breaches.
The Israeli airstrikes, which occurred overnight, targeted five key locations across Syria, including the capital Damascus and Hama Airport. In addition to the injuries reported, 13 individuals were confirmed killed during the strikes and a subsequent ground incursion.
Since the fall of Bashar Assad’s regime in December, Israel has reportedly captured parts of southern Syria in efforts to distance the forces of the new Syrian government from its borders.
Egypt also condemned the Israeli raids, describing them as a new and blatant violation of international law. Cairo urged international stakeholders to pressure Israel to end its occupation of Syrian land and comply with the 1974 Disengagement Agreement.
Similarly, Jordan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates expressed unwavering support for Syria’s sovereignty, stability, and security. The ministry stressed that Israel must respect international legal frameworks and the UN resolutions that call for the protection of state sovereignty and non-interference in the internal affairs of other nations.
