Sudan Army-Aligned Foreign Ministry Proposes Plan for Transitional Government Amid Ongoing Civil War

Sudan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, aligned with the country’s military, has unveiled a plan to move toward elections, aiming to end the ongoing civil war that has led to the displacement of millions and the deaths of tens of thousands.

The blueprint, shared in a post on X this past Sunday, outlines the steps toward establishing a transitional government, which includes the appointment of a civilian prime minister and opening a national dialogue with political groups and civil society organizations. The plan is designed to pave the way for free and fair elections.

The Foreign Ministry called on the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) to lay down their arms and withdraw from key regions, including Khartoum and Darfur, in order to take part in the peace talks. However, despite the army’s claims of progress in combating the RSF, the latter continues to hold control over the western regions of Sudan, including Darfur and West Kordofan.

The United Nations recently accused the RSF of obstructing humanitarian aid to famine-stricken regions. The foreign ministry has urged the international community, including the UN, African Union, and Arab League, to support this initiative, emphasizing that it reflects a national consensus aimed at restoring peace and stability in the country.

Since the war began in April 2023, Sudan has seen brutal clashes between the Sudanese army, led by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and the RSF, headed by his former deputy, Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo. As of now, over 12 million people have been displaced due to the ongoing conflict.
