Syrian Photographer Anas Alkharboutli Killed in Airstrike Near Hama

An award-winning Syrian photographer, Anas Alkharboutli, working for the German news agency DPA, was tragically killed in an airstrike near Hama, Syria. The incident occurred during intense fighting between Islamist-led rebels and the Syrian army, as part of a larger offensive in northern Syria. Alkharboutli, who was only 32 years old, had documented the Syrian civil war and won several prestigious awards, including the 2020 Young Reporter Trophy at the Bayeux Award for war reporting.

He was with fellow journalist Ali Hajj Sleiman when they were struck by the airstrike in the Morek area near Hama. Alkharboutli was severely wounded and died before reaching the hospital. The attack comes amid an escalating conflict, with 704 casualties reported in the ongoing fighting. Alkharboutli’s death highlights the dangers faced by journalists in conflict zones as they work to shed light on the realities of war.
