Syrian rebels have launched an offensive to capture Hama, a strategically vital city that has remained under government control throughout Syria’s civil war. According to rebel commander Hassan Abdul Ghany, the insurgents have begun advancing into the city, although pro-government forces—bolstered by heavy Russian airstrikes—are resisting the assault.
The fighting follows the rebels’ recent victory in Aleppo and subsequent advances southward, with efforts to secure strategic positions around Hama. Intense clashes occurred overnight between rebel forces and the Syrian army, alongside Iran-backed militias.
Hama’s fall would mark a significant setback for the government of President Bashar al-Assad and his allies, Russia and Iran, potentially paving the way for further rebel advances toward Damascus and Homs. Hama also serves as a key city protecting religious minority communities in nearby Muhrada and Salamiya.
