Syria’s Future at Crossroads as UN Chief Marks 14 Years of Civil War

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has urged immediate action to secure Syria’s future as the country marks the 14th anniversary of its devastating civil war.

Guterres condemned the immense suffering caused by the conflict, including chemical attacks, barrel bombings, and prolonged sieges that deprived civilians of food and medical aid. Since its outbreak in March 2011, the war has claimed over 500,000 lives and displaced more than 13 million Syrians, leaving cities in ruins and exacerbating humanitarian crises.

“The Syrian people have endured unimaginable hardship,” Guterres said, emphasizing the destruction of hospitals, schools, and homes. Despite the devastation, Syrians’ calls for freedom and dignity have remained “steadfast,” he added.

Recent developments have introduced a fragile hope. The Assad regime collapsed in December following a major offensive by opposition forces led by Hayat Tahrir Al-Sham. However, sectarian violence continues, with reports of deadly ambushes in Latakia.

Guterres warned that Syria’s future “hangs in the balance” and called for an end to all violence, along with an independent investigation into civilian deaths. He stressed the need for an inclusive political transition that ensures accountability and national reconciliation.

“The time for bold action is now,” he stated, urging the international community to support Syria’s path to peace, stability, and reintegration into the global community.
