Washington, D.C. – The United States has announced new sanctions against Sudan following a formal determination that Sudanese military forces used chemical weapons during last year’s brutal civil conflict with the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
In response, the U.S. will halt exports to Sudan and suspend government-backed lines of credit, intensifying economic pressure on Khartoum amid ongoing international condemnation.
“The United States calls on the Government of Sudan to cease all chemical weapons use and uphold its obligations under the Chemical Weapons Convention,” said U.S. State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce in a statement issued Thursday.
The civil war, marked by widespread atrocities and humanitarian devastation, has prompted growing calls for accountability and stricter international oversight.
