The United States is currently probing the leak of two highly classified intelligence documents detailing Israel’s preparations for a potential retaliatory strike on Iran. House Speaker Mike Johnson confirmed the investigation during a CNN interview, stating he expects a briefing on the matter shortly.
The leaked documents, reportedly created by the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, analyze U.S. assessments of Israeli Air Force and Navy operations based on satellite imagery from October 15-16. They began circulating last week on the Telegram messaging app, raising significant concerns within both U.S. and Israeli defense circles.
These documents highlight Israel’s response to a ballistic missile attack from Iran on October 1, which marked Iran’s second direct assault on Israel within six months. While the Pentagon is investigating the leak, a senior Israeli official emphasized the seriousness of the breach, although a U.S. official assured that it would not hinder Israel’s planned response to Iran.
The leaked files, published by a pro-Iran Telegram account called the “Middle East Spectator,” were claimed to be sourced from the Pentagon. The first document details Israeli Air Force preparations, while the second focuses on munitions and UAV (drone) activities, indicating a high level of readiness for an attack.
In the wake of the missile assault, which caused panic and damage in Israel but no critical losses, Washington has urged Israel to avoid strikes on Iran’s nuclear and oil facilities, fearing a broader regional conflict. Following a drone attack on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s residence, Israeli officials suggested that this incident could lend legitimacy to wider operations against Iranian targets.
President Joe Biden expressed confidence in his understanding of Israel’s intentions regarding an attack on Iran while also seeing potential for de-escalation in the ongoing cycle of violence.
