Ukraine faces significant energy shortages and potential blackouts this winter as ongoing Russian missile strikes have devastated its power infrastructure. With more than half of the country’s energy generation capacity destroyed, Lithuania is dismantling an entire power plant to support Ukraine’s energy supply.
The European Union has pledged €100 million from frozen Russian assets for infrastructure repairs and solar panels in schools and hospitals to reduce reliance on power stations. However, the EU can only supply about 25% of Ukraine’s energy needs, leading to concerns of a 6 GW shortfall, equivalent to Denmark’s peak annual demand.
The International Energy Agency warns of a fragile energy system, urging further support as winter approaches.
