Ukrainian diplomat urges Western support to target Russian drone production linked to Iran conflict

In a sharp escalation of rhetoric at the United Nations, Andriy Melnyk, Ukraine’s permanent representative to the United Nations, has called for direct strikes on Russian drone production facilities, citing their growing role in the ongoing war and ties to Iran.

Speaking during a special Security Council session, Melnyk said Russia’s transfer of modernized drones to Iran has made its production sites “legitimate military targets.” He urged Western nations to provide Ukraine with long-range weapons capable of hitting these facilities deep inside Russia.

Growing Russia-Iran Military Ties

According to Melnyk, Russia has been supplying Iran with upgraded versions of Shahed drones, originally designed by Tehran and widely used in the war since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

He described Moscow as Tehran’s “main accomplice”, warning that the partnership could destabilize the Middle East and threaten global economic stability.

“This crisis is deeply intertwined with Russia’s invasion and its broader imperial ambitions,” Melnyk said.

Call for Western Military Support

Ukraine has already conducted strikes on Russian drone infrastructure, but Melnyk stressed that greater Western support is essential. He emphasized the need for:

Advanced long-range missile systems

Increased domestic weapons production

Stronger international coordination

He argued that enhancing Ukraine’s strike capabilities would not only defend its territory but also contribute to stability in the Middle East.

Wider Security Concerns

Melnyk also accused Russia of transferring attack helicopters to Iran, potentially violating UN arms restrictions. He warned that the evolving Iran conflict is giving a “new lifeline” to Russia’s war economy, especially through rising global oil prices.

Additionally, Ukraine has reportedly deployed hundreds of defense experts to Gulf countries to help counter drone threats linked to the expanding Russia-Iran cooperation.
