Ukraine Explosion in Lviv Kills Police Officer, 25 Injured in Suspected Terror Attack

Lviv Blast, Russia Link, and Drone Strikes Intensify Ukraine War Tensions

Lviv, Ukraine – A young police officer was killed and 25 people were injured after two explosions rocked the western Ukrainian city of Lviv in what officials are calling a terror attack linked to Russian operatives.

The victim, 23-year-old Viktoria Shpylka, died early Sunday after responding to a reported break-in in the city center, according to the National Police of Ukraine.

Authorities say the explosions were caused by homemade explosive devices planted in waste bins, detonating moments after police arrived at the scene.

Police reported that the first blast occurred shortly after midnight when officers responded to a suspected shop break-in. As a second crew arrived, another device exploded.

The coordinated detonation left 11 people hospitalized, including six law enforcement officers in serious condition.

In a statement, President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that a suspect had been detained. Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi identified the suspect as a Ukrainian woman.

Suspect Linked to Russian Intelligence

Officials later revealed that the 33-year-old suspect allegedly assembled and planted the explosives under instructions from an agent connected to Russia’s special services.

Ukraine’s Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko said both police and the Security Service of Ukraine had carried out the arrest. Authorities are now working to identify other possible accomplices.

Regional prosecutors have launched a formal investigation into what they described as an “act of terrorism resulting in grave consequences.”

Officer Remembered as War-Era Recruit

The fallen officer, Viktoria Shpylka, had joined the force at the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

“She was only 23 years old,” police wrote in a Telegram statement, noting that she began serving during the early months of intense fighting in the Kherson region.

Her death underscores the continued security threats far from the front lines, even in western Ukraine, which has largely avoided the heaviest combat.

Fresh Russian Strikes Before War Anniversary

The attack in Lviv came amid another night of massive Russian missile and drone strikes across Ukraine, just days before the fourth anniversary of Moscow’s full-scale invasion.

Kyiv reported that its air defenses intercepted 50 missiles and nearly 300 drones overnight. Targets included energy infrastructure, residential buildings, and railways, according to Zelensky.

In the Kyiv region, local official Mykola Kalashnyk confirmed at least one fatality. A woman and a child were also hospitalized with injuries.

War Enters Fourth Year

The invasion ordered by Russian President Vladimir Putin has become the largest war in Europe since World War II. Hundreds of thousands of soldiers are believed to have been killed, wounded, or gone missing on both sides.

Western analysts estimate that Russian combat losses exceed those of Ukraine, though exact figures remain disputed.

Russia currently controls around 20% of Ukrainian territory, including the Crimean Peninsula, annexed in 2014.
