Army chief reports 480 sq km recovered as Russian spring offensive continues
Kyiv, Ukraine – Ukraine has regained control of 480 sq. km (185 sq. miles) of territory in the southeastern and eastern frontlines since late January, according to Ukrainian army chief Oleksandr Syrskyi. Ukrainian forces returned to eight settlements in Dnipropetrovsk and four in Zaporizhzhia, strengthening their defensive positions.
Despite these gains, Syrskyi said Russian troops continue their spring offensive, regrouping forces and pressing to establish a buffer zone in Dnipropetrovsk, even after suffering significant losses in personnel and equipment.
President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said last week that the frontline situation is the best since mid-2025, reflecting Ukraine’s growing operational momentum. Military analysts note that Ukrainian counter attacks in southeast Ukraine, including the Hulyaipole and Oleksandrivka directions, are disrupting Russian plans around the key logistics hub of Pokrovsk in eastern Donetsk.
Russian forces continue to gain ground in parts of Donetsk, particularly north of Pokrovsk, where battles have raged since mid-2024. Syrskyi visited the area and ordered additional ammunition and supplies to bolster Ukrainian troops.
Alongside ground operations, Ukraine has intensified long-range strikes on Russian oil infrastructure, targeting Baltic Sea ports and facilities in the Leningrad region, as diplomatic efforts to end the war remain stalled.
