Ukraine carried out its most extensive drone attack on Moscow early Tuesday, killing at least one person and causing significant disruptions to air and rail transport, Russian officials reported.
Moscow Region Governor Andrei Vorobyov confirmed the assault began at 4 a.m., with waves of drones targeting the Russian capital and its surroundings. “At the moment, one person is known to have died, and three others were injured,” he stated on Telegram.
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said at least 69 drones were intercepted before reaching the city. The attacks sparked fires in multiple residential areas and damaged buildings, forcing evacuations in the Ramenskoye district, southeast of Moscow.
Russia’s aviation authority suspended flights at all four major Moscow airports, as well as in Yaroslavl and Nizhny Novgorod, due to security concerns. Meanwhile, falling drone debris damaged rail infrastructure at Domodedovo station, about 35 km south of Moscow.
Local media, including the Baza Telegram channel, shared footage of fires across the capital, allegedly caused by the strikes. Governors of Ryazan and Belgorod regions also reported drone attacks, with parts of Belgorod experiencing power outages.
The attack comes as the United States pushes for an end to the war, which began in February 2022 when Russia invaded Ukraine. On Tuesday, Ukrainian and U.S. officials were set to meet in Saudi Arabia for peace talks.
Ukraine has repeatedly stated that its strikes inside Russia are aimed at military infrastructure critical to Moscow’s war efforts. Both sides deny targeting civilians, yet thousands, mainly Ukrainians, have lost their lives in the conflict.
