UN Condemns Israel’s Actions in Gaza as Civilian Death Toll Rises

The United Nations’ top human rights official has issued a scathing condemnation of Israel’s ongoing military campaign in Gaza, describing its methods as “horrifying” and responsible for “unconscionable suffering” among the Palestinian population.

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk delivered the statement on Monday, as Israel’s bombardment of the Gaza Strip continues amid escalating regional tensions, including missile exchanges with Iran. Türk emphasized that the scale and impact of Israel’s warfare methods raise serious concerns under international humanitarian law.

“The means and methods of warfare being used by Israel are inflicting horrifying, unconscionable suffering on Palestinians in Gaza,” he said, calling for immediate restraint and accountability.

The death toll in Gaza has surpassed 55,000, with thousands of children among the victims, according to local health authorities. More than 19 months of near-continuous airstrikes and ground assaults have devastated infrastructure and displaced much of the population.

The UN has repeatedly called for a ceasefire and unimpeded humanitarian access, but deadly attacks persist, including recent strikes on civilians seeking food and aid.

As the crisis deepens, global pressure continues to mount on Israel to change course and for international actors to intervene to prevent further loss of life.
