A senior official from the Al-Qaeda affiliate group Hurras al-Din was killed in a US airstrike in northwest Syria, according to a statement from US Central Command (CENTCOM) on Sunday.
The precision airstrike targeted and killed a high-ranking finance and logistics official of Hurras al-Din, a group linked to Al-Qaeda. CENTCOM confirmed that the operation was part of its ongoing efforts, alongside regional partners, to disrupt and degrade terrorist activities aimed at civilians and military personnel from the US and its allies.
“We will continue to relentlessly pursue terrorists to defend our homeland, and US, allied, and partner personnel in the region,” said Gen. Michael Erik Kurilla, CENTCOM’s chief.
This attack follows a similar strike on January 30, when another Hurras al-Din leader was killed in northwest Syria. The US military maintains around 900 troops in Syria as part of the international coalition against Daesh, which was established in 2014 to combat the group after it seized large areas of Iraq and Syria.
