Police detain suspects following antisemitic blaze as Middle East tensions drive global unrest

ROTTERDAM, Netherlands – Four men have been arrested following an overnight arson attack at a synagogue in Rotterdam, Dutch police said Friday. The blaze occurred at ABN Davidsplein around 3:40 a.m. local time and was reportedly caused by an explosive device. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and the fire burned out quickly on its own.

Police identified the suspects as men aged 17, 18, and 19, apprehended near another synagogue after authorities noticed a vehicle driving erratically in the area. Officers are asking for witnesses to come forward to aid the investigation.

Authorities noted the attack comes amid rising antisemitic incidents in Europe, reportedly connected to heightened tensions from the ongoing U.S.-Israel conflict with Iran. Recent attacks include a synagogue explosion in Liège, Belgium, and a car-ramming incident at Temple Israel in Michigan, U.S.. Michigan officials highlighted a potential link between the Iran war and targeting of Jewish communities, calling the incidents part of a wider pattern of violence.

The arrest of the Rotterdam suspects underscores growing concerns over antisemitic attacks in Europe and beyond, particularly during times of global military conflict.
