Ukraine Russia war escalates as drone attacks hit oil infrastructure and fuel supplies
In a fresh escalation of the Ukraine Russia war, Ukrainian drones have struck key Russian oil infrastructure, targeting the Baltic Sea port of Primorsk and a major refinery in Nizhny Novgorod.
Officials in Russia confirmed the overnight attacks, which caused fuel leaks, fires, and infrastructure damage, though no casualties were immediately reported.
Drone Strikes Hit Strategic Oil Targets
According to Ukrainian drone forces commander Robert Brovdi, the attacks focused on weakening Russia’s energy network.
In Primorsk, a fuel reservoir leaked after being hit by debris
The port is a key oil export hub used by Transneft
In Nizhny Novgorod, a fire broke out at the NORSI oil refinery
Regional governor Alexander Drozdenko said a pipeline was initially damaged before confirming the fuel leak. Meanwhile, Governor Gleb Nikitin reported that two facilities were hit at the refinery.
Major Refinery and Infrastructure Damage
The NORSI refinery is one of Russia’s most important energy sites:
It is the fourth largest refinery in the country
Processes around 16 million tonnes of oil annually
Produces a significant share of Russia’s petrol supply
Authorities also said a power station and nearby homes were damaged in the strike, though no injuries were recorded in early reports.
Targeting Russia’s War Economy
Ukraine has intensified attacks on oil facilities in recent months to disrupt Russia’s ability to finance the war.
Energy exports are a critical revenue source for Moscow
Recent strikes reportedly affected up to 40% of Russia’s oil export capacity
Disruptions include attacks, pipeline closures, and tanker seizures
Primorsk itself was previously targeted in March, when an oil depot was set ablaze, highlighting a continued focus on energy chokepoints.
Diplomacy Stalls Amid Escalation
While fighting intensifies, diplomatic efforts remain stalled.
Talks involving United States, Ukraine, and Russia in cities like Abu Dhabi and Geneva have failed to produce progress—particularly on territorial disputes in eastern Ukraine.
A planned fourth round of negotiations was postponed, further dimming hopes for a near-term resolution.
Rising Pressure in the Ukraine Russia War
The latest strikes underline a growing strategy by Ukraine to hit deep inside Russian territory, targeting assets that sustain the war effort rather than just frontline positions.
As both sides continue to escalate, the conflict shows no immediate signs of de-escalation.
